Northern Marine 80 Expedition Yacht Lora History

Northern Marine 80 Expedition Yacht Lora
Compare the Hull and other characteristics between the
Alaska Fisheries vessel on the left and Nothern Marine LORA on the right.

LORA’s hull follows the design of Alaska’s sturdy crab fishing boats which are designed to (theoretically) withstand 35 foot waves. Looking at the images top and bottom of this page shows the marked similarities in hull and superstructure design of these seaworthy vessels.

LORA- a Short History

LORA was practically brand new when the current owner bought her in March of 2005:

December 2002: Formally launched (as ZEUS).

Entire 2003: No trips – the first owner wanted various customizations and ZEUS spent the entire 2003 in the Northern Marine shipyard.

2004: ZEUS went for just 2 trips with her first owner, one to Alaska, and one to Mexico, and then her first owner got into financial troubles and put her on the market at the end of the year (2004).

2005 (March): Current owner bought ZEUS and renamed her LORA, and contracted a large upgrading project at Northern Marine that took 9 months to complete. That is when the owner changed the layout (added a cabin), installed zero speed stabilizers, hard top, the beaver tail, the super keel, the diverters on the hull, the quiet propeller system, the transom doors, 2nd windlass, 2nd water maker, 2nd autopilot, ... and second “everything” (for redundancy), jatoba floors throughout and countless other improvements (700k+ of work on that practically brand new boat).

2006 (February): LORA was launched, and cast off for Panama Canal and went back home to the British Virgin Islands, and then cruised mostly around the Bahamas while planning a trip to the South Pacific, for which the owner bought LORA – and that never happened because of work commitments.

His family has grown larger now and needs a boat with 6 cabins, that is the only reason to sell LORA; the owner has identified the next boat and that is why he has so drastically lowered the price (compared to any other Northern Marine boats on the market), to avoid having two boats.
