Dear All,

I had the opportunity to inspect Moana, the 80' Custom Explorer catamaran, during the 2017 Palm Beach Boat Show. I have been looking at her specifications and sending them out to clients for several years now as I felt she was an interesting blend of range, efficiency and the option for speed. This is a hard combination to get in a seaworthy vessel.

One of the very interesting things I learned about the boat was that she is a one-owner vessel with the same Captain. In fact the Captain was the build manager of the boat. The Captain and crew have taken excellent care of her and she is in very good condition, especially when you take in the number of miles she has done in the last 17 years.

Moana has done over 118,000 NM since launched, which is an average of about 7000 NM per year. Most of those miles have been done in remote places in the South Pacific and elsewhere, the owners wanting to visit places that "had not been written about yet".

One of the first questions we discussed was just how seaworthy Moana is and the Captain stated the obvious. He told me, "We have done over 118,000 miles in remote areas and it is impossible not to encounter some very bad weather in that amount of time and traveling. She is great, you can trim her for any conditions and she is extremely solid". He showed me a core sample from one of the hulls, a thick outer layer of glass and carbon fiber, PVC core and then another layer of glass and carbon. When I looked around I saw no signs of stress cracks.

The Captain related a story to me about when they first launched the boat and were doing a trip in bad weather. He had a female chef who was a sailor onboard and in the middle of the night she came up to the wheelhouse and said to him, can you feel the boat is out of synch, she is fighting the seas. So he said well go ahead, take over, of course thinking this will come to nothing. She played with the course, then asked about how to trim the hulls and in 10 minutes the boat was gliding along. She stayed onboard for a good while!

They do operate the boat 80% of the time at 12 knots but sometimes they will run her up to avoid some weather or to make a port in daylight on a medium distance run.

The anchor gear is set up for exploring; one has 300' of chain and 300' of rope and the other 500' of chain. They can run the rope/chain one aft and use it as a stern anchor when needed.

There is a huge amount of storage and it is well organized for world cruising. There is good refrigeration and freezer storage, both in the galley and elsewhere. Interestingly, there are no pot holders on the cook top; I asked and he said, we have never needed them. There is a large center hold just off the galley that is the pantry, plus other storage everywhere.

The engine rooms are easy to get to and well done. The access to the sides of the main engines is tight but not terrible and the rest of the equipment is very easy to service.

Shoe Storage and Warmer

There are a number of interesting features, like the shoe storage that that has warm air from the battery room/converter room fed through it so your wet shoes dry in short order; holding plate style chest freezer that is three baskets deep and three across; the tender garage with the built-in flush tank for the diesel outboard engine; and the split hatches to the engine room so you can open a small one for single access or the large one for when you are working or need to replace equipment.

All the wiring and piping is very neat and well done and all areas of the boat were clean and well presented.

Over all if you are looking for a family cruising boat that has range, speed, moderate draft and HUGE space in a 80' boat, you need to look at Moana.

Master Stateroom

I think the next owner will be as happy with her as the first one has been for the past 17 years. The crew would be pleased to take the next owners to all the wonderful places they have visited.
